Learning

This page covers how translations are shown and what gets saved to study later. In the app these live in three places: where the translation appears is chosen per game in the region card (on the start screen), how it looks is Settings → Display, and what is saved is Settings → Learning.

Overlay placement

Move the translation from next to the text, to the bottom, to a spot you draw

The overlay is an always-on-top, transparent, click-through window that sits over your game. Where it draws the translation is set by Translation position in the region card, on the start screen's Screen tab. With fixed regions, each region has its own: select the region on the map, then pick one. In cursor and window modes there is one answer for the game. The map shows where the translation will go, as a dashed frame.

  • Near text — each translation is drawn right next to the original text, so your eyes barely leave the action. A new game starts here. Image mode cannot place translations next to the text; use Bottom or Custom there.
  • Bottom — a subtitle-style strip at the bottom of the game window. Works with every reading method. When two or more regions use Bottom, they share one strip. The text follows the size of the game's own text, never smaller than the Overlay Font setting.
  • Custom — press it and draw the rectangle where the translation should go. Change position draws it again, and × goes back to Bottom.

The choice is saved with the game profile, so each game keeps its own. Quick translation remembers its own position too, apart from every game. To change it later, use the Region tab in Settings or the Capture card on the Log strip; the resident-mode bar has Bottom, Near text and Custom buttons as well (with fixed regions, its Bottom and Near text apply to every region). See Region for the rest of the card.

Overlay appearance

How the overlay looks is the same for every game, and lives in Settings → Display under Overlay (translation):

  • Overlay BG — background opacity, 0–100% (default 92%).
  • Overlay Font — text size, 50–200% (default 100%). In Near text it also scales the size relative to the original text.

The same two sliders are on the Display card of the Log strip, and on the resident-mode bar, so you can adjust them mid-game without opening Settings. See Resident Mode.

Difficulty hints (CEFR / JLPT)

Difficulty is a switch in the Log header, not an overlay setting. Turn it on and the marks appear on log lines, where you have time to look at them; the overlay stays plain so nothing competes with the game underneath.

The scale follows the language you are reading:

Source languageScaleVisible levels
JapaneseJLPTN5 → N1
Other languagesCEFRA2 → C2

Classification uses curated word lists plus length / structure heuristics. Common A1 words are left unmarked so the marks stay meaningful.

Auto-save

Auto-save words, under Words in Settings → Learning, decides how aggressively Playto saves what you encounter to your Word Book / Journal:

  • Manual — you decide what to save by clicking each word.
  • Auto — words above the difficulty threshold are saved automatically as you play.

Auto is convenient for passive sessions; Manual is better when you want a curated study list.

The rest of Settings → Learning

  • Words — Auto-save words, Explanation Language (the language word and grammar explanations in the Log are written in; Auto = the language you translate into), and Album screenshots.
  • Review — Daily review goal, Sentence cards and New sentences per day, Phrase cards, Review reminder, and Streak Banner.
  • Read aloud — how words and sentences sound when you press a speaker.
