You want to play a game that isn't in your language — actually play it, not stop and study it. Most ways to translate a game pull you out of the experience: Alt-Tab to a translator, a phone camera, a mod that only works on some engines. Playto is an in-game translation overlay for Windows — it reads the on-screen text in place and shows an AI translation right over the running game, with no mods, and you adapt how it captures and displays to fit each game.

Playto Lite is the free version on Steam: place one capture area over the text and it reads, with no account and no per-game setup. Cursor-follow reading and window capture come with the full version.

Playto is a Windows app that runs alongside your game: it reads the on-screen text and shows the translation right over it, so you never leave the game. The panel below is a mock game screen — not a video — that behaves the way the real overlay does. Hover the text, switch capture between cursor-follow and a fixed region, change how the text is read, and move the translation between "over the original" and a subtitle bar.

Why most game translation spoils the experience

Translating a game's text usually means one of these, and each costs you the experience you came for:

  • Alt-Tab to a translator — you leave the game, paste the text, read, and tab back while it waits.
  • Point a phone at the screen — no install, but every reading takes your hands off the controller.
  • Install a mod or text hook — reads text directly so it's accurate, but it only exists for certain engines and reaches into the game's files.
  • Most screen-OCR tools capture one fixed rectangle, or only on a key press.

For a document an interruption is a pause; for a game it breaks the immersion and flow you were there for. A fuller survey is in how to translate text in PC games.

Two ways to translate a game screen: fixed region and cursor-follow

How Playto captures text and how it shows the translation are two independent settings. The first one is decided less by genre than by what's in your hands — because a cursor is either there to follow, or it isn't.

On a controller, there's no cursor, so cursor-follow has nothing to ride. Pin a fixed region over the subtitle or dialogue band and it reads hands-free while you play normally. This is the setup for action games, and for anything you'd play on a pad — and the same one that suits a visual novel's fixed dialogue box.

On mouse and keyboard, everything above still works — and cursor-follow opens up on top of it: hover a tooltip, item, skill or quest entry and Playto reads whatever is under the pointer. Window mode (beta) is the third option and works with either input. It reads the entire game window in the background — nothing to draw, nothing to reposition — and you keep the overlay hidden, summoning it with F5 only when you want to read. Good when text turns up somewhere different every time.

Two ways to display, in any of these: laid over the original text, or placed elsewhere with the original kept alongside. Keyboard and mouse shortcuts cover the frequent actions, so you adjust capture and the overlay on the fly — without stopping the game.

How the overlay runs over the game — no mods, no injection

Playto reads the screen from the outside — no game files modified, no code injected, no per-game patch — and runs as a translucent overlay on top of any PC game, Steam or not.

There are three modes for how it reads the text. Standard printed text is read fast and reliably by OCR, but heavily stylized or handwritten letters are OCR's weak point. For those, image recognition (VLM) can read them, so you pick the mode that matches the game's text style.

What a game overlay actually has to solve

Drawing translated text on a screen is the easy part. A game moves, and most of the work is in not getting in the way. These are the problems Playto's overlay is built around.

Text shows up in places you can't predict

Dialogue at the bottom, item text on the right, a tooltip at the cursor, a system message in the centre. Drawing one rectangle means re-drawing it all session. So there are three capture modes: cursor-follow reads whatever you hover, fixed region pins a band like a dialogue box and reads it hands-free, and window mode reads the whole game window so there is no region to place at all.

Re-reading the whole window every frame would be wasteful

In window mode, sentences that haven't changed are not re-translated — earlier results are reused and only the changed parts get processed. A scene-change detector clears stale hints the moment the screen cuts, so you don't read a translation belonging to the previous scene. Capture, OCR and translation run off the game's thread, so they aren't competing for frame time.

A translation permanently in view is its own problem

So the overlay can stay hidden while reading continues in the background — hold F5 to peek and the hints appear only while held; a short tap latches them on. You read on your own first and check yourself, instead of having the answer sitting on screen. The overlay also pulls itself back when the camera is moving hard, which is a deliberate trade-off: for combat logs, a tight fixed region is the better tool.

Nothing goes into the game

Playto reads the screen from the outside. No game files touched, no code injected, no per-game patch or SDK, and the game's memory is never read or written — it works the way screen-recording software does. That also means it isn't limited to games someone has written a hook for.

Window mode is still labelled beta — games move their screens very differently and the tuning is ongoing. Details in the window mode docs. Reading a live game well is genuinely hard, and we keep working on it — here's the honest engineering reason why.

Why an overlay, and not Alt-Tab or a patch

Playto is built so you can read the original instead of replacing it — and that's exactly why the overlay gets this much attention. A translator you have to Alt-Tab to is used once and abandoned; a translation that sits permanently over the original stops you reading the original at all. Both fail the same way — you finish the game having learned nothing.

So the overlay is built to be reachable but not in the way: the original stays the thing you read, the hint arrives where you're looking, and peeking is a key press rather than a permanent state. Is Playto a game translation overlay?

Yes. Playto is an in-game translation overlay for PC — it reads the on-screen text and draws the translation over the running game, so you read in place instead of switching to a separate translator.

Will the translation overlay work on any PC game?

The overlay runs on top of any Windows PC game client — Steam or not — because Playto translates from the screen image, with nothing installed into the game itself. Borderless or windowed mode gives the cleanest capture.

Capture, OCR and translation run on a separate thread from the game, so they don't compete with it for frame time. For a typical dialogue screen the translation appears within about a second; more text or slower hardware can make it longer.

Does Playto need mods or a patch?

No. Playto reads the screen from the outside — it does not modify game files, inject code into the game, or need a per-game patch or an SDK.

Does it work with games that have anti-cheat?

Playto only captures the screen and never reads or writes the game's memory, so it works the way screen-recording and streaming software does. That style of tool is usually unaffected by anti-cheat, but kernel-level policies differ by game, so the free demo is the way to confirm your own game.

Which languages does Playto support?

Playto supports 23 languages — including Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, German and French — and translates from one of them into another.
